Cotton: Cotton was a major commodity in the agricultural economy of Florida
from the 1830s to the 1860s, with plantations in North Florida as productive as those in
neighboring states. But cotton production declined after the Civil War as other
agricultural endeavors played a larger role in the state's economy. In the mid -
1990s, more favorable prices for cotton brought renewed interest in the crop, with nearly
1000,000 acres generating cash receipts of more than $40 million. Cotton production is
concentrated in Santa Rosa, Jackson and Escambia counties.

Seafood: Florida
consistently ranks among the top 10 states in the dockside value of fresh seafood, with
average annual sales of more than $200 million, of which shrimp account for more than 30
percent. Florida fishermen catch more than 90 percent of the nation's supply of grouper,
pompano, mullet, stone crab, pink shrimp, spiny lobsters and Spanish mackerel.

Strawberries: The commercial development of strawberries in the United
States has come principally since the Civil War. Florida is the nation's No.2 producer of
fresh strawberries, accounting for about 15 percent of the crop. Strawberries are produced
on more than 5,000 acres in Hillsborough and Manatee counties, with about 200 acres
devoted to the crop in Broward and Dade counties. The crop was valued at more than $160
million in 1998.

Sugar Cane: Florida's
modern-day sugar industry began in the early 1920s on the southeastern shore of Lake
Okeechobee. Sugar cane is now grown in Florida on more than 420,000 acres, primarily in
Palm Beach, Hendry, Glades and Martin counties, with about 200 acres devoted to the crop
in Broward and Dade counties. The crop was valued at more than $160 million in 1998.

Tomatoes:
Tomatoes are native to the Americas, probably originating in the Andes
mountain region of South America. The earliest written record of the tomato
dates back to 1554. Florida farmers grow practically 100 percent
of the U.S. field-produced fresh tomatoes from January to April each year.
Florida growers typically harvest more than $40,000 acres of tomatoes
annually, with the crop valued at more than $450 million. Tomato production
is concentrated in Manatee and Collier counties.

Honey: Florida traditionally is among the top three states in
honey production, with the crop ranging from 16 million pounds to 25 million pounds in
recent years. There are about 1,500 commercial beekeepers with 240,000 colonies in
Florida, and another 5,000 hobby beekeepers with five or fewer backyard colonies.
